"Disappointing but Safety First!
Today we attempted to band at UIC. The chicks were a good age for banding. So why didn't we band? Because of one stubborn boy.
The real problem was where one of the 3 chicks was sitting. The ledge at UIC is straight and has no outer lip to prevent the chicks from backing off the ledge. Just before we were ready to go retrieve the chicks, one of the young sauntered out to the outer edge and decided to stay there The only access to the ledge is out a window directly across from where the chick was sitting. If he had been sitting anywhere else we could have safely gotten out on the ledge and grabbed him before he got in trouble. In this case if we began to step out side, his instinct is to back away, He would have dropped 28 floors. Banding is important but it is a luxury. It is more important to have a successful nest than it is to risk their safety just for the sake of banding."
